Tag 1 / Day 1

Today I am quite tire, it was a very long day....
To start, I was so uncomfortable for the duration of the 9 hour flight. Not to mention that we were delayed by a whole hour from leaving the Atlanta airport because the plane crew decided that was the most opportune time to fix a keypad o the cockpit door- after you have everyone crammed on the fully booked flight in the next-to-no-leg-room seats, who are already expecting a very long trip. ....
I could not wait to stand one we landed. And then of course that lasted only about 30 minutes until I had gotten through the Passkontrolle (passport control) and grabbed my bags (which I'll ask you to remember weighed 47 and 63 pounds). And by grab, I do mean that I felt like I had to run at them on the baggage carousel and wrestle them off the track.
But, as soon as I got through the Ausgang (exit), I saw my German buddy Helly rushing towards me and was immediately relieved. She didn't hesitate at all in helping me and suggested we eat some breakfast at Burger King.
What is Burger King like in Germany? ...I ordered an "Apfel Caramel Muffin" Healthier looking, but still very American.
The train ride from the airport to the uni campus went smoothly, as did the very short block-long or so walk from the Bahn Ausgang to my dorm, but of course there had to be some little problem along the way. My dorm is on the 4th floor. In a building with no elevator and very narrow hallways. Carrying 2 large suitcases up the stairs became a 2-person effort of dragging and nearly kicking them all the way, but alas, they made it and so did we.
We spent a some time walking around the very peaceful and pretty grounds surrounding the dorms, before heading to the Stadtmitte (downtown ) to explore there. I hadn't realized how many really nice green spaces the city has. We were also lucky that the weather was super sunny and about 45 deg F all day. There is a pedestrian street called Koenigstrasse that completely lined with shops. But, however unfortunate for me, ALL of them close on Sundays. Only Starbucks, a few other coffee shops, the Chinese restaurants and a few chain food places were open today. So after a lovely stroll we wound up at a Soup Restaurant, similar to a Panera. We both ordered the Potato soup, which had the most lovely pureed texture and was super flavorful. My favorite part was how it was served in mini ceramic tureens.
The evening was pretty relaxed, I unpacked everything in my suitcases and realized that I need 35 hangers that I will hopefully remember to buy tomorrow. I also met one of my neighbors. She lives above me and was super friendly, and conveniently is also American. I am forever greatful because she and a friend of hers came over to my dorm and help me set up the Ethernet cable so that I can have internet here evermore. (Note that by "help me set up" I actually mean I said "ummm, I don't know how to do this" and they plugged in the cable for me and walked me through everything else :) I will also add that both are studying computer science here).
And thus for the most part, you have my Day 1 adventures of being in Germany.
